Key points on the Apostille Convention now in force in Vietnam

From 11 September 2026, the Apostille Convention applies in Vietnam. Public documents used between Vietnam and other member countries now need only a single Apostille certificate, instead of the time-consuming and costly consular legalization process.
1. What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a certificate issued by a competent authority of Vietnam or of another Contracting State to the Apostille Convention to certify the origin of a public document, namely the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the signatory acted and, where applicable, the identity of the seal or stamp affixed to the document.
Key points to note:
- A public document bearing a valid Apostille may be used in countries with which the Convention applies, without consular legalization.
- An Apostille does not certify the content or form of the document, and does not replace notarization or certification.
- An Apostille may be stamped or affixed on the document itself, or issued as an attached sheet that must not be detached (detachment invalidates the Apostille).
- The receiving authority may require the underlying document to remain within its period of validity.
- Any person presenting a public document may apply for an Apostille; the applicant need not be the owner of the document.

| Foreign public documents for use in Vietnam (from a country with which the Convention applies) | Obtain an Apostille from the competent authority of the issuing country |
| Countries with which the Convention does not apply (non-Contracting States or objecting States) | Consular certification and legalization still apply |
| Documents legalized before 11 September 2026 | Remain valid; no Apostille is required |
4. Which Vietnamese public documents are eligible for an Apostille?
